When I first saw this photo, I immediately thought of writing a blog post about this and that is what I am doing right now.
Apparently, the photo above shows an elderly woman that is around her 50s, 60s, 70s –I don’t know maybe even 80s– taking an exam. You may have seen and read a lot of news stories about old people who wasn’t able to get proper education in their younger years and studying once again in an elementary or secondary school. But “Lola”, a Filipino word for grandmother, above isn’t taking her typical quarterly exams. Instead, she is taking her college entrance examination in one of the biggest state universities in the Philippines which happens to be also the same university where I am currently attending.
Mentioned about the fact that I am a student of this university where Lola is taking her exam and experienced the admission process of this institution, I can definitely say that sitting in that chair while facing your test booklet is not an easy work. It requires a lot of patience, perseverance, hard-work and even sweat. Considering the very mature age of Lola, I am pretty sure that doing the same thing that the other 70,000 young applicants of the university wasn’t a piece of cake for her. Even ascending the stairs to the assigned room where you are going to take your exam is not an easy task. And yet she managed to reach her room and take the exam. I salute Lola for this.
This picture is a huge slap on the face to the youth who were given the chance to have proper education yet still doesn’t value this opportunity that they have in their hands. This fact makes me ashamed of the youth where I currently belong. Many people including the younger and unfortunate ones want to enter college and finish their studies but due to their financial instability and other factors, they cannot fulfill this dream of theirs. And Lola, right here in this photo, decided to use her remaining energy and years for learning. How come some parts of the youth and fortunate ones don’t realize this?
I hope Lola can pass the entrance exam.
